Pilates & Yoga

Why Pilates instead of other forms of exercise?

Pilates moves are slow and controlled so suitable for everyone.  The exercises encourage a lengthening in the muscles, an increased range of movement at the joint whilst increasing strength in the core.

Many exercise classes cause muscles to shorten and stay shortened whilst strengthening them which can leave the body prone to injury.

Why is it important to work the core?

If you don’t actively focus on strengthening the core muscles then the body strengthens the external muscles at the expense of the internal ones which can lead to imbalances and injury.

Who is Pilates or Yoga suitable for?

Pilates and yoga are suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels’ beginners, intermediate and even the very fit. Both disciplines are taught in levels so every individual can work to their own level and progress slowly and safely.

How long does a Pilates or Yoga class last?

Sessions last an hour including a warm up, the main exercises and focus and then a lovely restoration period to ensure that you feel amazing and for all the physical and neurological changes to be assimilated appropriately.

What do I wear for Pilates & Yoga?

Leggings or comfy shorts or trousers, a short-sleeved top with an extra layer and bare feet.

Do I need to be able to meditate to do yoga?

No obviously meditation is one of the main forms of yoga however you reap the benefit through the physical asanas and just focussing on how it feels in the body will produce a meditative effect.

What are the differences between Hatha Yoga & Pilates?

They are both mind body exercises so will help the way the body functions however Hatha Yoga focusses more on stretching the body with some core strength as well as pranayama (breath work), Dhyana (meditation), hand  mudras etc, whilst Pilates focusses more on core strength with a little stretching.

What type of session is best for me 1:1, small groups or classes?

If you have injuries, a medical condition or are pregnant it is always best to start off with a 1:1 session to get the best personalised advice and the focus you need to get started then its up to you as I offer 1:1, small groups and classes to allow for everyone’s budget and daily schedule.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga refers to a set of exercises and postures that are designed to align the skin, muscles and bones, open up the body’s many channels especially the spine to allow energy and circulation to move freely. Hatha postures are slower and work on balancing the body and uniting the opposites both strength and flexibility.

How often should I practice Yoga or Pilates?

You will still reap benefits if you practice only once a week, but obviously the more you practise the more consolidated the changes will be on a physical, mental and emotional level.  The beauty of these 2 disciplines are that they fit in really easily with your usual weekly timetable and commitments all you need is a mat, a space and off you go.  The more you do the more your body will gently open, strengthen and lengthen and your activities of daily life will become easier.
